Mug
v. The Singaporean version of cramming for exams, i.e. scanning notes into one's brain. As if it wasn't filled with enough junk already.

Only if Necessary
adv. The night before for classroom assessments; one day for lecture tests; and one day and night (per subject) for major examinations.

This author is currently on hiatus for the ignoble cause of mugging. The public is advised to remain calm, as this routine protocol has been shown to have no effect on one's violent tendencies in 96% of cases.

Argh, my blog's kinda stagnating thanks to all the tests this couple of weeks, heh. Still, Chem's pretty screwed - ive failed for the past two terms, and the trend will probably continue this term, considering that 3M got a class MSG of 5.17 even with all the imba mugging shytz like derek and the PRCs in there. (They had two people with full marks, too.) SPA practicals were even worse, at least it only takes up 5% of our grades next year. >_<

At least there's math to raise the spirits. We scored waaay better than last term - kudos to everyone for the effort put in, especially Ben. =P

Just can't wait to get this few weeks over and done with - Bio tomorrow, haiz. And we've hardly even been taught on the topics tested. =X

Oh yeah, and about the photo in my last post - it IS from a microscope, hehe. Guess that needle kinda gave it away. =P Originally wanted to capture some a pic of some cells we were studying de, but looks like the light was too bright to distinguish anything.

been really busy this week, with all the memorising to do for tests - damn chem, chinese and maths. if only mindlessly mugging equations could help us out in our later life, then i might feel more compelled to score well in tests. <_<

i won't bother to waste my time going into a rant about the inflexible education system here, though. after all, it has been proclaimed: WORK = FUN. so stfu and work on your chem file.

instead, here's some random pics to make up for not blogging at all for the past 5 days or so. D:

HC Gym FTW! (yeah, i know this is kinda old, but this is in no way supposed to niao you, byap...)

oh crap, barrier's broken! a flaw in our multi-faceted school security system - how do we defend against terrorists wanting to drive a car bomb into hwachong nao?!

guess where this pic came from and you win an e-cookie. xD

happy happy day!

Actually, half-day, since the school gave us half a day off thanks to the great performance of our sports EP3s. That's the great thing about independent schools - holidays if they feel like it, haha. Except nowadays it only occurs twice in a year, after A-levels and now.

The aftermath:
(Photo by KY, slightly blur though.)

I must say we're all too enthusiastic about school, lol. =P So the rest of the day's mostly spent at LAN. Though i wasted half of it on a rather long nap. >_<

Still, 15 golds and 14 silvers for the recent sports nationals - good job all, esp gym, judo and track! Though cheng's still pissed that his judo 'b' div boys got only silver. Crazy PMS rampage of his today. D:

Great job for the 3N soccer team too, for winning their match today 2-0! Both goals scored by zacky summore. Who says GEPers suck at soccer? xD

Only bad thing that happened today was the wind blowing away my zuowen, lol. Seriously. Really saddening that that blasted piece of paper went out the window, heh.

Luckily it was only the question paper, thanks again to KY for scanning it for me. Guess ive found a new excuse for not handing up homework after all, since mah dawg's already an old son of a bitch and won't eat paper anymore.

gym comps

It's the gymnastic nationals this week, so i get to skip 3 days of school to go down and support our team. Right now there's a two hour break before the next event (waste of time, bleh) so im back home blogging before i leave again, consdering the stadium's just a 10 min bus ride away. xD

So far, our 'C' div boys have gotten gold again, and swept more than 80% of the individuals awards. I think B div got gold, too. Awaiting results for the A and B (optional) divisions.

Guess this monday looks set to be a half-day again. Gogo track and judo! :3

We'll be having our gym camp after the competition concludes today too. It's actually more of a one-night stayover than a camp, and no training included, lol. It's been a slack week. =P

the mrbrown talk

Haven't blogged about it yet, so here it is, photos and all =P

So mrbrown came down to hci ytd to give us a talk, which was supposed to be on the theme "Singlish and Satire: they are the evil stepchildren of Literature, is it?" But as he frankly admits though, he's no literary expert, just "a practitioner of the craft", so the session ended up with him mostly just sharing his experiences with us, in singlish too! No literary discourse at all nor adherance to the slated topic for discussion. xD

i think the OT/slim had too high an academic expectation of mrbrown, as much as he's from HCJC (just found this out ytd), lol. he's a comedian whose aim is just to make people laugh (or so he says), not a freaking professor or whatever. heck, that's his job itself - he largely relies on advertising sponsors to make a living.

To sum it up, it was probably the most interesting talk we've had, but it would have been tons better had the topic not been so dry, even though they've tried to tweak it a little to sound more informal.

Still, a great experience to be able to meet his witty self in person. And for a few photos, too. :3

- mrbrown talking about his most (in)famous article - the Today satire which got him sacked.

-and kiawee asking him about "red lightning", erps. =.=

new phone! =D

...Finally, haha. Time to chuck that old Nokia 3120, which ive used for slightly more than one year already since i picked it up in sec 2. (That happened to be my first phone, too.)

Here comes me new Sony Ericsson K750i! Gotta <3 the cybershot 2.0 mpx camera too, zomg. All for $288 (without plan), which is pretty cheap considering any other phone from any other brand with comparable functions would cost at least $400. Then again, the K750's been in the market for quite some time already, so guess its value has depreciated a fair bit since then. =P

Im quite lucky i even got my hands on that model though - all of the other shops were sold out of it and didn't stock it anymore. Fortunately, we found it in the very last shop we visited, which had just 2 of them left. Apparently it's still pretty popular...

In comparison, here's a photo of my sucky china webcam used to take the above pic (shot with the phone, of cos.)

Looks like photos will finally be revived in my posts again, now that i have a camera wherever i go. Will make things much more interesting, hehe. :3

Wanted to watch Transformers at suntec after getting the phone, but it was sold out again. That's like 2 failed attempts liao lor, think ill just wait till my dad gets the DVD from china =.=

Ended up with Harry Potter instead, which is not bad thanks to all the witty lines and dizzying special effects but would otherwise be pretty average. They cut out A LOT from the original book though, but the film still lasted almost 2.5 hours - blame JK Rowling for writing such a thick book. =/

uni mentorships - the truth.

gah, i can't believe i haven't blogged for the last 5 days - school is getting ever so mundane. Adelaide exchange has come and gone; birthdays have come and gone; and soccer tourney matches have been postponed (cos the other side didn't turn up. =.=)

a lot of sports competitions are coming though, gym+judo+track ftw! hope we can get another half-day off this year xD

just wanna share something leefy told us the other day after bio practs...

for you guys under external mentorship schemes (esp. to local universities) such as SMP and HSSRP, surely you must have wondered why those professors would ever have agreed to mentor your groups. they already have such busy schedules, so why should they bother spending extra time to oversee a project done by a bunch of (lowly) secondary school students?

the official reason msotly given is that the profs share similar fields of interests with their mentees, and would like to further their interests through such projects - but if they were really that committed, why don't they just conduct research by themselves, rather than spending so much extra time to guide amateurs through it?

another reason would be that these "prestigious" programmes wish to groom young talents (which is indeed one of the major motivations behind CAP, i believe.) however, there is no guarantee that these "talents" would ever contribute back to that area once the project is done with; scholarships and attachment schemes would be a much wiser choice in this sense.

after all the praising of the mentors, we would probably think that they are oh-so-compassionate, caring about society around them and all that. however, the truth is that they are forced to do it. Not specifically mentorship programmes per se, but apparently they do have this CIP system too. And mentorship schemes do happen to add to those hours.

in other words, those smart professors would much rather simply mentor some students than to go down to East Coast Beach and spend an entire day picking up litter there. it's something like how we'd rather teach math to primary school kids to meet the CIP requirements.

of course, this is not the discount the few professors who do willingly take part in mentorship schemes because they truly believe it is for a good cause. however, after getting this little piece of info from leefy, im pretty much convinced the case is often otherwise.

this would probably explain why my mentor has been pretty slack and not chasing me after my work either. which is of course both a good and bad thing. =/

im 15.

+ one day old.

OHNOEZ EMO I WONT BE CONSIDERED A JUVENILE IN COURT ANYMORE IN 364 DAYS. DD:

That aside, im watching Live Earth now. It's really amazing what those crazy environmentalists (on crack) can come up with to save the world. xD

07/07/07 passed rather uneventfully, especially since i was flu-stricken and spent half the day sleeping. =/ At least im feeling much better now. A family dinner at Botak Jones, and that's about it lol.

Of course, definitely not to forget all the birthday greetings from you 3Nners, CAPpers and random friends in general. Really appreciate it guys! <3

At least ive been promised a new phone, many thanks to my aunt. My mum actually wanted me to stick with my current oldddd Nokia 3120 because "it's still useable", but luckily my aunt managed to convince her to foot out a few hundred bucks for a new one, considering i can trade-in for $40.

A much-needed upgrade, heh. Still, budget's only $200 - $300, so im eyeing the Ericsson K750i or K618i. ;) ("Treat it as a birthday present," my mum tells me.)

Did i mention i share the same birthday as her too? xD

"Seven-seven-seven leh...once in a lifetime lor," so she says. And according to some news report, 777 couples got married on that very day. o_o

07.07.07

(NOTE: The post date of this post has been altered. Please scroll down to read the previous posts.)

07.07.07's gonna be an unusual day this year. Everyone seems to want to take advantage of the nice date by scheduling anything from marriages to newborns to concerts on that day, haha. And McDonald's Delivery may get a soar in orders too (3 triple 7 - i'm lovin' it!)

Do support Live Earth on that day hor! It's a damn cool concert, for a good cause ("Save the earth, my foot!") too. And also the weird nEbO thing whose adverts have been popping up everywhere. o_o

But most importantly, not to forget that it's my birthday too, whee~! (YES, STOP reminding me that my birthday coincides with that of Liki's already!)

Sadly it's likely to pass like any other normal day since there won't really be any celebration or whatever. Which doesn't really bother me too much either, since my birthdays have been passing as uneventfully for the past few years, except maybe for a few gifts from close friend and relatives (thank you! <3) and some random songs. Think the last time i had a birthday party of sorts was in primary 5, heh.

Not to mention that it's a saturday too, which means no bonding sessions or any of the other interesting school stuff, and ill most probably be cooped at home for msot of the day. D:

Still, this means i get to exchange cool blue for my new pink ICs. With a better and more recent photo, too. Biometric summore leh! xD

Too bad it'll still be a year before i can watch NC16. T_T

In any case, hopefully the 7 July '07 that will be a lucky day too, so i can try my hand at blackjack! :3

lol.

LOL @ me getting over-paranoid with PTG. (my mum only met mr cheng and docherty earlier cos she couldn't figure out who were the other teachers, so i was spared from the warth of jloh and cao, haha.)

LOL @ hiphop for PE today (the legit moves do look cool with a professional but plain lame when you've got a variety of tards like kiawee following along. xD)

LOL @ the real breaking that goes on inside gym, under our instructor's noses of course.

LOL @ alan for being chsed by 4 gangsters cos he gave them The Finger. (he ran home and the security guard prevented them from entering.)

LOL @ math test. (and derek is extremely disappointed with him 48/50 score when the 3N math msg was 5.21. screw you PRCs and muggers. =/)

LOL @ blee smoking out his computer by leaving GE running on auto-attack mode for more than two days straight. (he spent more than $200 the day after buying a new power box and graphic card, which just shows how rich teachers are.)

LOL @ adelaide exchange ppl in chinese class (still, they're nice people, and i do wish they didn't have to sit thru such crap lessons. they've already picked up the art of stoning thru lessons from us. D:)

LOLZ AT SPACEPOOP. (inside joke =P)

LOL @ this lame post - cos i don't have anything better to say.

Just plain lol, lol. :3

let's post at 4.

We went down yesterday to watch EDC's production - Let's Stop at 4, a compilation of 4 plays - for a night of entertainment, randomness and pure catching up with friends (esp the SLC peeps). However, i don't think it quite matched up to Army Daze last year though - probably cos of the fact that they had waaay less time to prepare for it (according to inside info, at least.)

Still, i guess it was a success, being another sold-out production. (Army Daze was oversold for both nights it was staged.)

The first play, A Wolves' Tale, was (imo) totally crap. Which i suppose is forgivable, considering it was acted by the sec 1s, who didn't know stuff like pausing until the laughter had ended. Still, the "red hen" was rather cute. :3

Next, Red Man Green Man, a rather complex plot with quite okay acting. Sets you thinking (to a certain extent), but nothing much to be said as i guess it wasn't really meant for laughs.

Ministry of Emotions - probably the best and most memorable play out of the 4. Written and acting completely by the crazy choo jun, it was truly niaoing in every aspect, as much as our dear MOE's son akilan was there (in white school uniform, too!)

Pokemon, Powerpuff Girls and utter randomness ftw! EDC does have a knack for weird but funny musical interludes - last year, it was Hakuna Matata, and this time, it's Love Makes the World Go Round by our favourite cute characters. Got (some of) us singing along, hehe. xD

Lastly, No Parking on Odd Days - the EDC's gold-winning SYF play. Quite good, though i guess it wasn't really up to expectation. Seems to have been edited a lot compared to the original one written by Kuo Pao Kun though. But it was the first time i saw yi yong and andai performing, so quite interesting, props and all. =]

Definitely not a waste of $10. Though the day would have been much better if Transformers hadn't been sold out already - we wanted to watch it earlier. Ended up playing CS at our favourite LAN hideout, as usual, and realised that glassbuildings is a damn fun map, lol. =P

(Pardon me for the lame title, couldn't think of anything else. Besides, "post" is an anagram of "stop", lol.)

'Twas teh winnar at 5:28 pm.
