Mug
v. The Singaporean version of cramming for exams, i.e. scanning notes into one's brain. As if it wasn't filled with enough junk already.

Only if Necessary
adv. The night before for classroom assessments; one day for lecture tests; and one day and night (per subject) for major examinations.

This author is currently on hiatus for the ignoble cause of mugging. The public is advised to remain calm, as this routine protocol has been shown to have no effect on one's violent tendencies in 96% of cases.

YOG 2010

This is the 200th post.

On such a special occasion, let us rejoice in the coindental surprise of:

SINGAPORE WON THE BID TO HOST THE YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES WOOOT!

Haha we pwnd joo Moscow.

Well, ignoring the fact that YOG's probably 100 times smaller than the actual Olympics, and that it's mainly the youths, the IOC Committee, and PM Lee (he's young at heart too <3) who seem to be cheering on Singapore, it feels great for us to get another chance to get international recognition.

(The miniature scale of it is probably also why host cities are only given 2.5 years to prepare for it, whereas that of the Olympics get chosen 7 years in advance. I think we should be able to meet the deadline with lots of breathing space though, considering our new Singapore Toilet Bowl Sports Hub is already underway, and our foreign talent/workers do work very fast indeed.)

I'll admit it though, i think we really did put in a lot of effort into making this dream come true, especially with all the publicity and voluntary efforts from various organisations and youths to drum up support for Singapore. And im sure glad we get to reap the rewards of our sweat and tears this time round. =]

I can't really describe this inexplicable swelling of joy in me, and i do wanna get to sleep soon, so i shall kope some stuff from Bing's blog which somewhat coincides with my thoughts - Thanks in advance.

i have often said that i dont really like the country and the people and the education systems, but upon hearing the results and watching the countdown party scream and shout and cheer, i could only wish that i was there cheering with them.

the atmostphere was really amazing.

you know what?

a city celebrating because it has achieved something purely out of it's own blood sweat and tears, and now fully enjoying the hard work, that's a true measure of national pride.

in no way can national pride be better represented, certainly not by droning Majulah nor by mumbling We the Citizens. even on national day, it is somewhat forced, by order of a national holiday, that we come together to cheer our nation.

today was purely voluntary celebration and a sign of the passions of youths coming together to rejoice over a combined effort that resulted in success.

In Da News

Yay, finally a break from the endless barrage of tests to sit down and do some blogging.

So yeah, as most of you already know (perhaps too well), i did appear in an article in the Invest section of the Sunday Times on 17/2/08. Actually, it was an interview of my dad, and i merely koped like 1/10th of the photo space. D:

I won't provide the link to it here though, go search ST Interactive or dig through your old pile of newspapers yourself, you lazy bishes.

Seriously, we aren't really that rich though; in fact, you'll see me with some of the least expensive stuff in class, and im pretty conservative with my budget. (Yes the article is true, my parents do give me just enough allowance for food, with a little extra to spare at SIM sometimes.) My father runs a medium-sized company (Slide & Hide Systems) and got lucky in being chosen for the interview, thanks to a friend who introduced him to the journalist.

For those who are interested to know what goes on behind the scenes, the interview was more of an email interview, with the journalist sending him a set of standard questions to answer. I helped a little with the editing though to make his English seem more pro, especially since back then their English education wasn't that advanced. (See i has 1337 journalism skillz lawl.)

Then the photographer came down to our home to take a few shots of us about two weeks before the article was published. She took like 20+ photos though, and we even went down to the playground in a drizzle (at her request) for that. It was pretty quick, and she finished the job in just 1 hour. Of course only one photo was chosen, and that's the one you see in the article.

My mother wants to frame a copy of it up, lol. She's gotten quite restless since the article was published, probably thanks to her nervousness in wondering what our friends' and relatives' reactions will be like, or whether they'll even read it at all. But i guess its pretty normal in wanting an "elevated" social status like that.

(Btw, she says the photo isn't good cos the photographer didn't zoom in on us enough. I think it's pretty okay though, a close up of our faces isn't really that necessary.)

Plzplz stop niaoing me too much over the article kay. Im not used to the extra attention, go target wilfie or gary instead, they live in like, landed property worhx...=P

Speaking of that, if you watched Episode 1 of the new series of Police and Thief, it was actually filmed in our condominium. Apparently they had a plot twist so Tok Kong (Mark Lee) and his family received a condo unit from his "father" and moved in. Too bad they moved back to HDB at the end of the epidsode, would have liked to see them do the filming for a longer period - the crew only came down for a few days in the December holidays. =(

I think it was pretty biased in portraying the condo community as being arrogant and unfriendly though. The residents are actually pretty warm if you break through the silence in lifts, and we're already good friends with some of our neighbours. And the "Condo Management" isn't that bad, it just handles all the admin work and organises a meeting once in a while. Hey, they even plan stuff like educational trips and events to let the residents mingle and know each other better - for the kids especially. Something like your Resident Committees in HDB estates.

Then again, its just a comedy that's aimed at "heartlanders" living in HDBs, so i guess we shouldn't take it too seriously. Like meeting your arch-nemesis behind a cloud of steam in the sauna. xD

Spoiler: If you actually look closely at the scenes in their new "condo apartment", you'll notice it isn't filmed in a condo at all, and there's actually outlines of HDB behind the drawn curtains (obviously so they could deceive the audience). Cost cutting measures ftl.

And no, you can't see the sea from here.

Valentine's Day! <33

Time to get 'round to some lurvvin', lads. ;]

On the way home from Serene Centre at 7.30 pm (We were stoning in McDonald's hacking each other's handphones via Bluetooth) i couldn't help but notice the number of couples out tonight. It's the same sight at every bend; two lovebugs in their 20's intimately grasping hands as they strolled along, exchanging love bites and wondering...
Does he love me; I want to know!

How can I tell if he loves me so?
(Is it in his eyes...)
Oh no, you'll be deceived.
(Is it in his eyes...)
Oh no he'll make believe.

If you wanna know, if he loves you so, it's in his kiss!
(That's where it is!)

Ahem, kinda veered off to Something Unrelated, back to the topic now.

Actually, i don't really have much more to say about this, since most of us "guai kia" didn't have a Valentine's date anyway. Hey, even Mr Chia claims he doesn't have any plans for today lor, since he's supposedly "the unromantic type" *cough*

Surprisingly, we spotted our seniors Bertrand and Jethrol with some girls at some posh restaurant (not just any old Mac's, okay!) in Serene Centre. So yeah, best of luck to all couples, and do enjoy the atmosphere of unrestricted lurvy-durvy oochie coochie...you won't get such a chance without sparking off a public outcry on any other day. =P

CNY '08

Before i forget, happy Chinese New Year to everyone! I know it's like three days late, but the past few days have been packed with visits to and from relatives, collecting angpaos (free $$ lol <3),>gambling (yay moar moolah) and mugging for tests.

Actually, the last wasn't supposed to happen since teachers were meant to move their tests from next week to one week later so we can actually enjoy our short break from school to celebrate and have fun. At least that was the intention of the Sec 2 who suggested that change, and Mr Hon when he approved of it. So the teachers (grudgingly) postponed their tests...and replaced those next week with mock tests instead. <_<

So the CNY celebrations started off with a zomgwtfbbqmushploxwtimeasdfqwertyBANG! with the school's very own CNY concert, what else? Guess we can't go wrong with a Lion Dance performance by our Scouts...If only they didn't lie there for FREAKING TEN MINUTES while peeling oranges (and goodness knows what else) under that cloth.

Everyone cheered when they finally started getting up...but they got lazy and lay down again. We pretty much gave up after that.

The best part of the performance was probably the Wushu performance though. Only one screwup: When Justin phailed a couple of his moves. (I shouldn't be niaoing him since i probably can't do them either, heh xD)

Unfortunately i didn't take any pics of it, so i shall steal Kuan Yue's one instead.

And then we went to cards to the teachers (personally signed and delivered by all of 4N; even got Huang Ji's signature okay), visit our alma mater and all the "tradaitions" we do pretty much every year. Dunno if this year will be our last though. D:

On to more interesting stuff. Blackjack was a key component of every day of the festivities for me...Just don't tell anyone that. Quite surprising since i haven't gambled over CNY for like a few ears already...the last time i did was blackjack with 10 cent coins at my aunt's house after the reunion dinner. I think everyone likes to gamble over CNY because they believe the New Year bring about good luck and prosperity...but in gambling, if everyone gets all the luck and money, then where would it come from? =P

At least i was pretty lucky, winning about $30 over the three days with only bets of 50 cents to a max of $2. And that's usually already the lowest at the table, espeically when your uncles put down intimidating $10 notes all the time.

(Whether they got to keep it was another matter. Some lost a few hundred bucks lor o_O)

And i think the luck in my house is really good, cos when we play blackjacks, double aces and five-cards keep popping out. Poor banker.

You know the fengshui is coming to a head though, when you get stuff like:

DOUBLE DOUBLE ACE NEXT TO EACH OTHER WTF. I swear the picture wasn't staged. Lucky for the banker (my dad), the bids were only 50 cents each so he only had to pay out $3.

The probability of that happening is like, 4/52 * 3/52 * 2/52 * 1/52 = 4!/524 or according to my calculator, 0.000328%. That's around a one in 3 million chance of happening, right here in my very own home. And the guy to the right was a beginner who just learnt blackjack that day, and got double aces twice that day.

(The first time he got double ace, he didn't know what to do with it and actually went to draw three more cards, lol. Luckily he didn't go bust so he got double instead of triple his bet in return. xD)

Guess our four day holiday (kinda) ends in about 2 hours...oh well, the Monday blues are creeping in already. >_<

On a side note: McDonald's "Prosperity Meal" is a scam, as always. Don't buy it, unless you really have too much angpao money to spare. =X

The Problem with IT

Nothing really exciting this week, except for work and more work (and a Physics test on Monday), so here's some photos. Been a long time since i uploaded pics from my phone, too. D:

So lyk, Mr Loh got a new laptop (probably with Microsoft subsidies to show its support for Hwachong's "Future School", heheh) and happily brought it into class, to infuse state-of-the-art technology with world-class Chemistry lessons. Or maybe he just wanted to show it off (Wah, rotatable tablet screen leh!)

But that's when the problem starts.

...So we have no choice but to call upon those skilled in the art of rotation.

Oops, guess they turned it the wrong way round...again.

Finally, several tries and 10 minutes later:

We can start lessons proper and have fun with the tablet pen. :)

Lesson learnt (Other than the Boltzmann Theory, yum): Smart technology doesn't go along well with IT-stupid people. AND THAT'S WHY CSE/FUTURE SCHOOL MUST FALL. D:
