Mug
v. The Singaporean version of cramming for exams, i.e. scanning notes into one's brain. As if it wasn't filled with enough junk already.

Only if Necessary
adv. The night before for classroom assessments; one day for lecture tests; and one day and night (per subject) for major examinations.

This author is currently on hiatus for the ignoble cause of mugging. The public is advised to remain calm, as this routine protocol has been shown to have no effect on one's violent tendencies in 96% of cases.

children's day

Photo taken at 9.30 pm, 30/9/07.

I count about 10 children in the pool, even though its usually empty at this time except for maybe one health-concious overweight uncle. And they're making a fair bit of noise too.

Why is this happening? It's cos tmr's a school holiday for them - Children's Day. But for us, our exams start tmr. T_T

So while the kiddies get a day off and enjoy their Sunday playing around, us poor students have to mug like crazeh and to prepare for our two-week long exam period. Especially for Humanities.

Oh, the bitter irony. You people better treasure your children's day, you'll miss it soon enough. =(

EOY Exams may be just around the corner, but that doesn't prevent us from getting into iSpark Nite performances. =3

This is...3N.

Only 40s of our allocated 10 mins though, still have a lot of stuff to choreograph in a couple of weeks.

This is...not my class. i.e. 3O.

Both took (only) 2 hours of practice. Though getting ugly bruises from repeatedly doing the fall-on-knees part and rugby in class isn't cool. But Andai and Zacky still got it worse. D:

Yes, its my first time posting youtube vids, cos this blogskin isn't very good for embedding them. The width just too short, that's why i gotta scale down the vids so much, sorry. >_<

of mooncakes and friends.

We had a visit from my father's Malaysian friend, who's in Singapore with his wife to celebrate the mid-autumn festival. They stayed over at our house just a couple of nights ago, and brought us some mooncakes too. =3

Comes with beautifully designed packaging, intricate patterns on the mooncake skin and of course, long names like "Shanghai White Lotus with Almond 1-Yolk (Reduced Sugar)". S$25 per box of 4. D:

The filling is one of the best ive tasted though, and pretty innovative (using "corn custard" in place of salted egg yolk ftw - cuts on costs too, prices of duck eggs went up liao leh o_O) Sadly, my mother denounces chocolate flavour as it "isn't traditional anymore". That's the older gen for you i guess =X

Going back to my dad's friend, they were actually childhood friends in their polytechnic days too. Later, they even became business partners, but somehow broke up afterwrads as the friend was reluctant to take risks and slowed the progress of my dad's company. During that period, their hatred was so great that even exchanged nasty letters and comments about each other, and their relationship soured in the busness world.

Years later, they managed to patch up and are now friends again, which explains why they still come over to visit us sometimes (and how we get those mooncakes too. <3) I guess what this illustrates is perhaps what I wrote in a previous post: "There are no eternal friends or foes."

It's unfortunate that emotions are so volatile - friendships can easily break up over a minor incident. But relations can be mended as well - even though it may take lots of time and effort, one can surely eliminate the bad feelings between them and their foes as well. Perhaps this is just another cycle in our tumultous world we are witnessing.

Have faith, and a happy mid-autumn festival! :)

have a heart.

We did heart dissection for Bio practical today. It was gory, disgusting, fun, bloody, but probably the most interesting prac so far. <3

Well, its probably not as bad as dissecting mice, considering we're working on frozen pig's heart here. The closest ive ever done before was cutting up the gills of fish and crabs though, so its quite a new experience. Reminds me of my grandma chopping up pig's liver, lol. xD

And what all that without...photos! (eh, i sacrificed my time for these pics okay, didn't touch the specimen until the last 5 mins cos i had to handle my cam D:)

Yi Yong Yeevilly Yexamines Ye Heart. Ben cowers.

Down to work...

Gatsby with a heart.

Yi Yong innovates in showing the route blood takes through the heart with a condom inflated glove.

...And our proud biologists after all that hard work. xD

On a final note, YI YONG SHOULD NEVER BE A SURGEON IN FUTURE. Though that shouldn't be too surprising. ;)

+rep

I am glad to announce, Singapore has thus far achieved a unique world-wide reputation.

(Click to enlarge. I'm that Werewolf guy, btw.)

Yep, just got that fresh off SCO trade chat (i.e. mass server-wide chat). Looks like the notion that Singapore is a "fine city" isn't going to fade in quite a while. xD

PAP should really relook at its world-class law systems.

holidays

Are over...Liek zomg what a surprise, heh. As my MSN nick puts it, 'I need something more cheerful than "Sep hols are over, lol."'

And its surprising how many people actually responded to that. Replies range from shaun's "Sept hols are NOT over yet. =D" (yesh, we have 1 hour left of freedom, rejoice!) to a sneior's more enlightening "in a month's time, you can enjoy all you want for the rest of the year :P" Guess people are feeling the same, hehe.

Anyway, i sorta wasted my saturday morning helping out with the Yellow Ribbon street sales. Not much of a choice though, consideirng letchmi forced us to go cos we had insufficient CIP hours this year (fyi, i already have more than 100 hours in total) and warned us "the organisers will not be happy if you back out on your commitment!"

So Andai, Zhaoxing and I, along with some others, met up at Jurong East MRT at 8.30 am as stated in her message, but the volunteers there informed us that it only started at 9. Smartie Letchmie =.=

It's my first time in such a fundraising event though, going around town collecting coins in a tin can. Being the inexperienced nubcakes that we were, we mistakenly decided to head over to the nearby IMM to ask around for donations, since the MRT and bus interchange were flooded with other voluteers already. Wrong move - the security guard prevented us from entering.

Lesson 1. Asking for donations on private property is not allowed.

So we decided to go over to City Hall, where there were much larger crowds. Walking along CitiLink, we were chased away by Security again, who directed us to "the bridge under Suntec City". At least the security guard who attended to us was a nice guy, he donated $1. =3

Further down CitiLink, we were to later find...dundundun - Dah Wei and Kai Lee, positioned at a couple of spots where there was a bottleneck in the traffic. And we realised that Dah Wei had already half-filled his tin with coins just stoning there, whereas we hardly even had $5 worth of donations. Which means we wasted our time travelling around looking for donations, heh.

Lesson 2. Sometimes, just stoning there and holding out your tin is better than walking around giving lengthy explanations on your cause in fundraising efforts.

We split up as we reahced Suntec City, finding no above-mentioned bridge, intending to go around for a bit before meeting up at the Fountain of Wealth. However, we lost our way and only Andai made it there, only to find out that it was deserted. D: And again, we were shooed off by the dreaded guards.

Lesson 3. Never trust a Zhaoxing's advice, especially if he is hungry.

Dejected, we actually wanted to go to Orchard Road, where there were much more people and the tourists were (presumably) more generous. But then we realised we didn't know the way even though it's supposed to be just a 5 minute walk away, so we went all the way back to the MRT station. And met Dah Wei again, who by now had a bloody heavy tin filled to at least 5/6 of its capacity.

With only 1 hour left, we decided to change tact. Taking the escalators leading up to street level, we camped at the top, which also happens to be the entrance to some-office-building-i-can't-remember. Which means lots of people dressed in business suits hurrying through that area. Which means traffic, though not as much as that of CitiLink, but still significant enough. ;)

And this is where the most memorable part of the entire morning is. Because stoning there DID reap us more donations than running around the place getting chased by Security. And we met quite a few ang mohs and foreigners too.

Lesson 4. Not all white people are as kind as they seem to be. The Aussies are really nice people, but most Americans downright suck, giving you the Eye as they walk past, probably thinking i-won't-give-you-money-you-pathetic-chinese-scum, then simply daoing your sputtering attempts to speak.

A few trainloads of people later, our tins cans were getting heavier. And our hands were starting to ache, too. >_<

Lesson 5. The people most likely the donate are the old aunties who have too much spare change and the mums with their (cute! =3) kids. Not the rich people wearing those posh suits.

Eventually i got bored of actively requesting for donations, preferring instead to just wish everyone who walked by a merry "Good Morning!" It's definitely attention-grabbing (very important considering my hieght) and takes much less effort than saying a mouthful of "Good morning sir, would you like to donate to the Yellow Ribbon Project?" as Zhaoxing was doing.

It does get repetitive after some time though, saying "Good morning" every few seconds. But its definitely much more refreshing than gunning to get as much donations as possible, and feeling disappointed if someone didn't contribute. You stop focusing on the moolah so that at the end of it all, you don't feel that bad if you didn't manage to collect alot. And a greeting can't possibly be rejected, whereas a request for donations is easily rejected.

Besides, even if they don't donate, you know that you have cheered up someone's morning if he turns around, nods and smiles. It's even better if they return the greeting, like what some foreigners did. It's amazing if they spare you a bit of cash. It's life-changing if they put in $10, and tell you "You are a kind soul. God bless you." as a lady did when donating to Zhaoxing. (It's real, im not joking!)

Dah Wei & gang joined us afterwards too; we found out that Security had banished them from their spot as well. Turns out that they had already had more than enough of their share of donations though - Dah Wei even ran out of ribbons to be given to donors (they gave us 100 at the start). I had 86 left at the end of it all.

Lesson 6. Most people don't even want the ribbon, sticker, pen or whatever that they're supposed to get in exchange for donations, they just want to get rid of their small change. =P

Having stood for those 5 hours though, i must say that i will never voluntarily do that again. I had an ache in my back and legs for the rest of the day thanks to that. =/

Lesson 7. (From Andai) Only girls or really enthu boys would involve themselves in flag days. Girls, because people usually donate to them, especially if they're chio; and enthu boys, because their sincerity is priceless. xD

Gotta pity those St. John people who have to take part in flag day every year. =X

15

We watched the short film "15" by Royston Tan after Mr Cheng's lit lesson that day. It's pretty much a satirical comedy depicting a few gangsters' lives which Mr Cheng claims to be "the only Singaporean movie worth watching". IMHO, it isn't all that great though, being even quite lame at certain scenes, what with the heavy editing and use of unintelligible Hokkien, er, exclamations.

To be fair, i suppose there must have been some background literary significance that i failed to catch which made it so interesting for someone like Mr Cheng. Or maybe it was the gay scenes, i don't know. D:

However, there was this one line in the movie which got me thinking though.

"There are no eternal friends or foes."

Sigh, if only people were more understanding, trusting and open, humans might be able to lead a more harmonious existence together.

And paths may cross, but they soon split apart into different directions again. Or it might be the end of the road for some. At least we forgive and forget though.

But shit happens.

"Our friendship will only be as good as it lasts."

So be it, then. Time to move on.

carelessness

Looks like it's still around to taunt me, despite me resolving before - sometime or other - to check my test paper more thoroughly. Except its mutated into a totally different wicked form. D:

Previously, i always did calculations wrongly or put in some obviously wrong values. And now, im forgetting to do questions completely. In the latest maths test, i somehow skipping a 5 mark question...

Though i still got A1, so im happy enough. Seems like there won't be math exemption anymore, but meh, im satisfied lol =P

I do wish we have more time for tests. Then i can check thoroughly AND still do the bonus question. Currently, i always do the latter first...o_O

So booyah to maths tests, where a stroke of carelessness - a slightly off curve, a value copied wrongly - can cost you a few grades, so the results don't actually show your true standards most of the time. (Unless you're a Derek or PRC, of course.)

teachers' day 07

[I know this post is freaking late, just pretend you saw this on 1 Sep, lol. And sorry in advance for the blur pics. D:]

This year's teachers day celebrations were probably one of the best ive seen, thanks to the fact that we get to wear home clothes (haha, too bad RI peeps) and the performances put up by the sec 4s at the concert were pretty entertaining. And gym performed too - though it was a close repeat of the national day one so it kinda sucked...

The new teachers this year are kinda weird too. In a nice sort of way. =3

Orange balloon octopus ftw!

After that, we stormed the staff room to give out class presents to teachers. It's the first time in hwachong that we did that, though - largely cos of all the insane troubles we've caused, so better repay them this year and make them happy for at least a day. Plus we had quite a few bottles of leftover coke from a party that never happened, might as well give them out as complimentary gifts lol. xD

Pics of our *ahem* joyful teachers!

Three bottles - um, cheers! - for our FT! And the orange octopus makes yet another appearance. o_O

"No children, I don't want Coke, got enough Martell at home already..."

LeaLeeFY.

Sadly Chiak wasn't around cos he went pubbing. T_T

"Sorry Mr. Docherty, we aren't old enough to buy you vodka yet."

JLoh enjoys Coke. A lot.

Notice Spermie - Blee's pet toy - lying inconspicuously beside the Coke bottle.

(Sorry, didn't manage to get a photo of Mrs Liew though. =( )

After that, returned to Catholic High Pri (as usual) with the ex-6H ppl to visit the teachers. It's changed a lot - most of the teachers that taught us before have left already, so we only managed to meet up with 4 of them. And then there's those nice shinty statues around the campus which i distinctly remember not having been there on chinese new year.

Hmm, i wonder where all the money to purchase them came from?

But really, the campus is amazingly beautiful now. Lots of greenery, colours and artwork...seems more like a president's garden than a school to me. The only thing missing is air-con in the classrooms. D:

Later, there was some leftover food cos the teachers couldn't finish the food specially catered to them for teachers' day...so we basically got a free lunch. =3

Of course, how can we bid farewell without leaving behind our mark? ;)
