Mug
v. The Singaporean version of cramming for exams, i.e. scanning notes into one's brain. As if it wasn't filled with enough junk already.

Only if Necessary
adv. The night before for classroom assessments; one day for lecture tests; and one day and night (per subject) for major examinations.

This author is currently on hiatus for the ignoble cause of mugging. The public is advised to remain calm, as this routine protocol has been shown to have no effect on one's violent tendencies in 96% of cases.

IT Show 2007

Back from the weekend lull!

Term 1's finally over with satisfactiry results, so what better way to celebrate the start of the holidays than to go down to Suntec City for the annual IT Show?

But before i get geeky and all that, here's a wrap-up of my sabbatical last week and a peek at our magic performances:

The picture's not very clear, though. What that trick involved was to balance two forks stuck into a cork on the rim of a glass with only a toothpick, using the theory behind the center of gravity. So to those who were asking what the Physics of magic was, that's just one example.

YYY got a really cool "Ghost Deck" (worth $15) as a prize for his witty trcks too - he really deserved it. Credit goes to Gary, too, for posing as his Oracle over the phone, lol.

Ok fine, enough about magic. if you're not too technologically-inclined, though, i would suggest you skip the rest of this post, cos you probably won't understand much of it (or as the Chinese say, "dui4 niu2 tan2 qing2".)

Since it was the last day of the IT Show, the crowds were really crazy. Looking down from the escalator, all you see is a sea of people and Windows Vista's (crappy) advertisments going "Wow. Now in four great flavours."

It was really an eye-opener for me - seeing all the latest gadgets and getting to play with their cool functions while some smexy girls tried to sell me the product. Though i just walked away with a simple "Thanks, but no." after trying out the mp3 players and all that stuff.

Though the Starhub and Singnet booths were the most crowded - there were long queues to just get to the Singnet information counter, wtf. And even longer queues leading to the registration counters. And the only offer exclusive to the show that Singnet had was a lucky draw, with "a chance to win [lots and lots of cash] and [lots and lots of prizes]! (Terms and conditions apply.)" Singaporeans are just so kiasu and overly-hopeful.

At least Starhub had more marketing staff around, so it wasn't as much of a hassle to check out Starhub's booth. Or maybe it's just not as popular. Ohwell.

Most of the booths there were selling mp3 players and laptops with discounted prices and lots of freebies. Though Apple's booth probably pwned the others flat - it was a visual fest with all the sleek and stylish iPods and Macs. They're worth having orgasmic excitement over - that's also probably why the Mac's so white. Ack, if only i could have them, though the latter would probably appeal to me more. D:

In the end, my aunt bought some Lime digicam for almost $300. That's relatively cheap lor, considering that it isn't soem cheapo brand from China. The only thing bad about it is that it uses digital rather than optical zoom, and zooming in to the maximum 10x gives rather pixellated pictures.

I got myself soem random cheap accessories too. And the Logitech guy slipped in an installation disk for AuditionSEA into my bag when i wasn't looking. The design's nice and all, but the greatest issue at hand now is whether i should slot it in and start playing Audition again. It's like, we suddenly all reverting to old games, and quite a few ppl have gone back to it liao... =X

One thing i learned after the fair is that if you're looking for good deals, go only on the last day. it's like, the shops there slash the prices of their goods every day so the price diffrence between the first and last day could be even as much as $300. Though that money saved is in exchange for having to squeeze and compete with a few thousand more people.

After the fair, my aunt brought me to the coffee conoisseur (tcc) for a drink. Its damn ex - when i looked at the menu there, there was nothing below $3, except for a cookie. We ordered two smoothies and a slice of Oreo cheesecake and the bill came up to more than $18. Like wtf, a small slice of cake could set you back by almost $10 lor.

Though the quality of the food's quite good, you're probably paying more for the ambience and oddly-shaped chairs than anything else. In future, once i start working, ill probably visit almost every IT fair possible, though ill likely never go to such a high-class restaurant again unless its absolutely necessary, like a date or smth. =X
